Campus Improvement Updates

As the summer is drawing to a close, we are taking stock of all the improvements that have taken place around campus this summer. Here’s a brief update of what we’ve been up to:

The library is in transition. The former reading room in the elementary building is converting to become an elementary library. Mrs. Deck and many volunteers have been busy putting new barcodes on books to match our new library management software and packing books to move across campus. The upper school books will move into the front half of the library in the high school building, and the back half of the library has been converted into an additional classroom.

The library is currently scheduled to reopen at the end of August.

The multi-purpose room in the daycare building has been split into two rooms to accommodate an additional K4 class. Next year, we will be serving 54 preschool students.

Approximately $100,000 worth of new network equipment, wireless routers, and fiber optic cables have been installed around campus to beef up the infrastructure and support the new devices that we are introducing in the classroom this fall.

Chromebooks and tablets, along with new laptops for teachers, are scheduled to arrive next week.

Upper School building renovations:

  1. Painted the hallways
  2. Renovated the bathrooms
  3. Fixed leaks in the ceiling
  4. Made a new classroom from the back half of the library.
  5. Converted an office space into an additional classroom.

The Booster Club purchased an outdoor field sprayer to paint lines on the ball fields. This will greatly reduce the amount of time somebody has to spend lining fields before games. Thank you, Booster Club!

Football Camp Success

Left to right: Luis Miranda, Marquise Williams, Scott Johnson, Marc Peck

The first ever WCS Offensive Skills Football Camp was a huge success. Football players had the chance to work directly with former UNC QB Marquise Williams and members of the WCS coaching staff. Williams spoke to the players and shared with them how he used the motivation of losing every game as a freshman in high school to help him win every game , except one, the rest of his time in high school. He asked the players, “Why not you?” Head Coach, Luis Miranda, added, “Football is the greatest sport in the world. Each of you has the opportunity to do something special this season.”

New Hires at WCS

As we proceed through the summer, WCS is happy to announce additional hires to fill out our staff.

Mrs. Lethco with her husband Matthew and their daughter

Amanda Lethco has been hired as a part-time music teacher in the elementary school. Mrs. Lethco has 7 years of teaching experience, the most recent one being in the 3K program at the WCS Childcare Center. Before that, she taught 6th grade at Faith Christian Academy in Goldsboro and 1st and 2nd grades at Great Bridge Christian Academy in Chesapeake, VA.

Mrs. Lethco holds a bachelor’s degree in education with a music minor from Southeastern Free Will Baptist Bible College. She is excited to join the elementary faculty for the 2019-2020 school year!

Angie Darden has been hired as the admissions coordinator for WCS. Mrs. Darden is a familiar face around campus, as she has taught piano lessons to students for many years. Her daughters both graduated from WCS, and she is passionate about reaching new families and welcoming them to WCS.

Mrs. Darden with her husband, Richard
Mr. Craig with his wife Sarah and their children.

Kevin Craig will be teaching high school Bible and serving as the technology coordinator. Mr. Craig graduated from Appalachian State University with a bachelor’s degree in physical education and from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary with a Master’s of Divinity in Christian Education. He comes to us after serving as a children’s pastor in Texas for the last 5 years.

Mr. Craig says, “I believe God is calling me into a lifetime of Christian education. I have a heart for ministering to students and teaching them to live a life through the lens of a Biblical worldview and what it means to be a Christ follower.”

We need your help!

As we’re gearing up for the new school year, we need your help checking an item off of our to-do list. The middle school and high school buildings are in need of fresh paint in the hallways, and we’re looking for volunteers to help paint.

We’ll be here all day Monday-Tuesday, July 22-23. Use the form below to sign up for a time you are available to help out.

Please bring brushes, rollers, tarps, and other supplies that you have at home so we can make short work of this project. Can’t participate but have supplies we can use? We’d love to borrow them (and we’ll make sure they get back to you!).

Elementary students are welcome to participate in the painting project with a supervising adult. Middle school and high school students can participate on their own.

School Supply Lists

2019-2020 school supply lists will be posted as they become available. Elementary and middle school supply lists are by grade level instead of teacher-specific this year so you don’t have to wait for your class assignment to begin purchasing supplies. The high school supply list will be updated as teachers complete plans and provide their individual supply lists.

We are again offering pre-packaged school supply kits through The Pencil Box. Kits will be delivered to the school free of charge to pick up at open house, or you may pay a shipping fee to have your kit delivered to your home. Order kits at www.thepencilboxonline.com and use the code WCS2019 to access the WCS store.

WCS Welcomes New Upper School Teachers

Wayne Christian School is pleased to announce the hiring of two new teachers in the upper school. Chelsea Folz will be teaching math, and Chelsea Duffy will be teaching history.

Mrs. Folz with her husband, Andrew, and their children.

Chelsea Folz holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Meredith College, and has experience teaching math at both the middle school and high school levels. She is an active member of Crossway Church. After taking several years out of the classroom to focus on raising her children, Mrs. Folz is excited to join the faculty at WCS. She says, “It is important to invest time into developing students that are lifelong learners so that they will appreciate constantly learning and growing. If we can create lifelong learners in the mathematics classroom, my hope is that it will translate into their spiritual walks, showing them the great benefit of constant learning.”

Mrs. Duffy with her husband, Brian, and their children.

Chelsea Duffy (nee Anderson) is a 2005 graduate of Wayne Christian School. Mrs. Duffy holds both a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in education from East Carolina University and is licensed by the state of North Carolina in the areas of math and social studies. She comes to us with ten years of experience teaching at the middle school, high school, and university levels.

Mrs. Duffy is returning to Wayne County after several years away due to her husband’s career. She wants to teach at WCS because “I know the benefits of attending and working in a Christian school. As I attended Wayne Christian School from Kindergarten up until my graduation, I was able to see firsthand how wonderful it is to go to a school where the teachers not only loved me but prayed for me every day. Knowing my teachers not only cared if I understood the material, but also cared for me and my growth in my spiritual life, which gave me the best education possible. Not only do I want to have the opportunity to teach at my alma mater, but I also want the opportunity to share my love of Christ, love of history and math, and love of God’s children in a Christ-centered classroom.”

Campus Improvement Update

From moving classrooms to construction to prep work in the library, we’ve gotten quite a bit accomplished towards meeting our goals around campus this summer in the two weeks since classes ended. Here’s what we’ve been up to.

Cleaned out the book rooms in both the middle school/high school building and the elementary building to update our curriculum. Teachers will attend a training on June 13 to learn how to utilize the supplemental materials that go with the BJU Press curriculum.

Many teachers are moving to new classrooms to accommodate the 6th grade move to the middle school building and the addition of new kindergarten and first grade classrooms. The football team, along with several parents in the VIP group, have been on campus helping move furniture and teachers’ belongings. Classrooms will be set up after the floors are cleaned later this summer.

Technicians from Spectrum have been on campus pulling fiber optic cable to upgrade the wireless internet available. The next step is to install new routers and WiFi hotspots around campus.

In addition to moving the elementary portion of the library to the elementary building, the library is getting updated software. Approximately 4,000 of the books in the library need new barcodes to work with this new software. Mrs. Deck and some volunteers are working diligently to put these new barcodes on before starting the move.

Construction has begun in the childcare center to convert the lunchroom into an additional Pre-K classroom.

WCS Welcomes New Elementary Teachers

Wayne Christian School is pleased to announce the hiring of three new teachers in our elementary school. Deanna Ryan will be teaching kindergarten, Joy Wood will be teaching first grade, and Britney O’Hara will be teaching fourth grade.

“I’m really excited about these three new teachers,” says Mr. Miranda, elementary principal. “They show a true passion for Christian education, and we are happy to welcome them to the WCS family.”

Mrs. Ryan with her husband John and their children.

Deanna Ryan comes to us with 3 years of experience teaching in the public schools. She holds a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education from the University of Mount Olive and a Master’s degree in elementary education from East Carolina University; she is also licensed as a Birth-Kindergarten and Kindergarten-6th grade teacher by the state of North Carolina. Mrs. Ryan believes “it would be a blessing to have the freedom to merge my passion for teaching and children with my passion for Christ in a way to help my students learn more about God and the Bible and to eventually lead them to Christ.”

Mrs. Wood with her husband Dustin and their children.

Joy Wood has 11 years of experience as a teacher and curriculum facilitator in the Wayne County Public School system. She graduated from East Carolina University with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and is licensed as a Kindergarten-6th grade teacher by the state of North Carolina. Mrs. Wood is excited about the opportunity to teach at WCS and is looking forward to sharing her faith and integrating a Biblical worldview into her students’ daily learning.

Ms. O’Hara

Britney O’Hara is a graduate of Wayne Christian School (class of 2012). She completed a bachelor’s degree in elementary education at Trinity College of Florida in May and did her student teaching at First Christian Academy in New Port Richey, FL. Ms. O’Hara states that she “wish(es) to teach at a Christian school because I recognize the importance that having a Christian worldview has on a person’s life. As a Christian educator, the possibility is there to disciple and pour into your students by teaching them not only about the world around them but also the God who created it.”
