WCS Author in Residence

From Susan Ford, WCS Assistant Administrator of Curriculum and Advisement

Walk past Room 200, at the beginning of almost any period of the day, and you will quickly become enthralled as you listen to Mrs. Mays reading to her middle school Language Arts students. “Reading out loud to middle schoolers?”, you think? And yet, there completely absorbed and engaged, you will find 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students captivated as Mrs. Mays reads to her students for about 10 minutes each day.  The books she is reading this year are part of the Arby Jenkins series, by Sharon Hambrick. It is a BJU press series of novels.

But little known to many WCS families, is the fact that Mrs. Mays is the author of two published novels of her own!!  Sarah holds a BA from Bob Jones University and a Master’s Degree from Liberty University. After teaching for 10 years, Sarah left the classroom for a few years to have her second child, to pursue her Master’s degree, and to write her first novel, Mirror Image. Soon after publishing novel two, Secret Past, Sarah returned to WCS.  While highly qualified as both a math and an English teacher, Mrs. Mays’ “sweet spot” is teaching English/Language Arts, to middle school students!

Sarah credits her high school Creative Writing teacher with encouraging her to one day write a novel, and that encouragement led to the books she has published to date! Both books are well written and hold the reader’s attention with a “can’t put it down” quality.  Using elements of drama, romance, and mystery, Mrs. Mays’ words pull readers deep into her stories. Her books are written from a Biblical worldview and are inspirational in nature.

Mirror Image opens “When Detective James Hunter is sent to investigate an apparent drug overdose, he is overwhelmed with the feeling that there more to the young victim’s story…the young victim looks identical to his friend, Molly Blake.… As they seek to find answers to these questions, they uncover surprising secrets and gain insight into their own lives.”

Secret Past begins “when Molly Blake moves back to her hometown of Holly Hills and is unprepared for the surprises that await her. A stranger arrives in town with a claim that threatens to tear her family apart.”

You can find both of Mrs. Mays’s novels on Amazon in both print and Kindle editions.  Find her books by clicking on the book titles above.

If you buy her books and stop by after school, I am sure she would be happy to autograph them for you!  We are so thankful to have Mrs. Sarah Mays on our WCS faculty!

A Life of Faith

In our 10th grade Bible class, we have just finished studying the book of James. One of the key themes in the book of James is “Faith.” The Bible tells us that faith without works (or living for Jesus) cannot be called faith. Faith without works is dead, and a dead faith is worse than no faith at all.

As we live out our faith in Jesus we will continue to grow closer to Him. One of the best ways we can grow is through prayer. Prayer is how we communicate with God. In Daniel 6, we learn that Daniel prayed continually and was faithful in his relationship with God (Daniel 6:10). We can also see the example that Jesus showed us when He prayed. Jesus was very close to His Father when He prayed.

As followers of Jesus we should want to learn how to have the same close relationship with God that Jesus and Daniel did. When we have times that our faith is being tested or we are being treated unfairly because we believe in Jesus, we need to know that God is bigger than our problems. We can be like Daniel and refuse to look at circumstances and instead come to God for guidance and strength. When the lions are about to attack, trust in the Lord and He will help you.

Living out a life of faith can be difficult at times. We can come across a lot of things that get in the way of our walk and these things can interrupt our relationship with the Lord. We must be able to approach God’s throne in prayer with confidence (Hebrews 4:16) and according to His will He hears us (1 John 5:14-15).

God tells us that our faith must produce fruit; it must be visible. Verbal faith is not enough. Faith must inspire action. As God’s children we can show the world our faith in God by our actions. Are you living a life of faith? Can the people around you each day see a difference in your life from the world?

Alumni Spotlight: Reagan Hinton

Reagan holding a child in Ghana.

Reagan Hinton graduated with honors and was the valedictorian of the Wayne Christian School Class of  2011. Following graduation, Reagan earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and International Business from Colorado Christian University. She went on to complete a Master’s degree in American Government as well as earning her Juris Doctorate from Regent University.  After those accomplishments, Regan received a Master’s of Law in Dispute Resolution degree from Pepperdine University in Malibu, California.

Today, Reagan is the Staff and Program Manager at Geographic Technologies Group. She also serves as the president of Where Love Abounds, a Christian non-profit that she began while still a student at WCS. Reagan hopes to become a part of the diplomatic corps in Washington, D.C. in the near future.

When Reagan was asked what she felt was the most impactful part of her education at Wayne Christian School, she credited her English teachers and the writing skills she learned while at Wayne Christian School. Ms. Hinton feels that she was better prepared for the writing that was necessary for college and her career because of what she learned at WCS. She also recognizes that the Christian foundation of her education has played a pivotal role in the past eight years.

Regan recalls having her faith challenged as a freshman in college. Early on, she struggled with her faith and used what she learned at WCS to help her with the questions and challenges she faced. A Christian foundation was not something she always appreciated while a high school student, but now that she looks back on the last eight years, she sees how crucial it was to her becoming the person she is today. Reagan recalls what she learned from her teachers and how they helped to prepare her for the challenges she would face.

Where Love Abounds began during Reagan’s senior year at WCS. This was a way for her to stay connected with the people she met on the many mission trips she has taken. Today, Where Love Abounds operates in five countries, including Ghana, Iraq, and India. They have partnered with the Iraqi Christian Relief Council to help build homes for Christians who were displaced by ISIS in the Nineveh Plains.

Reagan will be visiting Wayne Christian School on Thursday, December 5, to share more about Where Love Abounds with the high school students. She will also provide information about her past mission trips and details about potential mission trips for WCS students in the summer. Reagan hopes more students will take an interest in serving in their communities and serving on mission trips.

Canned Food Drive

As the days get colder and the seasons of Thanksgiving and Christmas are quickly approaching, its is time for the annual SGA Canned Food Drive.  Sometimes we all forget how blessed we are, and how little others have. This is one way we can all work together for a great cause. The collection boxes will be located in the lobby of the Elementary Building, Middle School Building, and the gym lobby. As the basketball season is starting up, we would like for our students, parents, and other family members coming to the games to bring in canned food for the needy; five cans will pay your admission to home basketball games in November.  This is always a fun event for SGA. To see the faces of the volunteers at the Salvation Army when we pull up with a trailer load of goods is such a great feeling.  The WCS SGA will deliver the boxes the week of exams. Thank you in advance for your contributions.

Shelly Anderson, Upper School Assistant Principal

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program provides schools with an opportunity to celebrate the spirit of volunteerism throughout the student body and to recognize students who have distinguished themselves through community service. Students who receive the President’s Volunteer Service Award are eligible to win a $1,000 scholarship by going on to a state-level competition.

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards were created by the National Association of Secondary School Principals and Prudential Financial in 1995 to honor both middle level and high school students for outstanding acts of community service.

Applications for this award are due November 5. Please see Mrs. Ford (or contact her at sford@waynechristian.org) for more information about applying for the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards.

The Greatest Commandment

The Craig Family

From Kevin Craig, elementary assistant principal

It feels like we have been at Wayne Christian School for years, but we have actually only been here for twelve short weeks. Our family hit the ground running at the end of July when we moved to Goldsboro from Texas. Moving is never easy but we are so thankful to be here. We have truly been welcomed by everyone with open arms.

Our experience here at Wayne Christian School so far, reminds me of one of my favorite Scripture passages from the Gospel of Mark. In Mark 12 we find Jesus being questioned about the “Greatest Commandment” and Jesus responded by saying, “The first of all the commandments is: Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. This is the first commandment. And the second, like it, is this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these.” (vv. 30-31)

Our family has seen and experienced the greatest commandment being lived out in the lives of the administration, staff, parents, and students here at Wayne Christian School. We have been invited to many churches and invited to lunch and in homes. We have been given advice on good restaurants and things to do in the area. We have been constantly asked, “How are you doing?”, “How are you adjusting?” and other questions, just to check on us. We are truly grateful for the outpouring of support, encouragement, and love that has been shared with us over the past three months. This is truly a family of people who love God and love people.

Jesus tells us that we are to love God with all our being and we cannot love God without loving others. The Wayne Christian School family has done just that for our family since we have arrived in Goldsboro. We are so blessed to be serving alongside a group of families that are living out what Jesus calls the greatest commandment and we are so excited to be part of this great family.
